Hey there, and welcome to this week’s social media news recap! Here’s what’s happening this week:
📢 Meta’s “Community Notes” Launches: Meta’s new crowdsourced “Community Notes” system will replace third-party fact-checking across Facebook, Instagram, and Threads by March. Notes require cross-political agreement for display, aiming to minimize bias but raising concerns about effectiveness, especially with divisive topics.
🌐 Instagram Threads and Fediverse Integration Still Unclear: Will Instagram Threads join the fediverse to allow interaction with services like Mastodon? The answer is still up in the air. Meta has not confirmed if or when account portability features will be added to its roadmap.
📸 A New Photo-Sharing App for Bluesky: An independent developer is launching Flashes, a photo-sharing app for Bluesky, powered by the AT Protocol and built using code from the developer’s earlier Bluesky client, Skeets. As an open alternative, it could offer users a fresh platform to explore outside of Meta’s ecosystem.
📅 TikTok Faces Potential U.S. Ban: The U.S. Supreme Court is reviewing TikTok’s appeal against a law that mandates its sale or a ban by January 19, 2025, due to national security concerns over its Chinese ownership. A decision is expected soon, with potential outcomes including a forced sale or full ban. Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) is also pushing for a 270-day extension of the deadline.
👀 Snapchat's “Find Your Favorites” Campaign: With TikTok's future uncertain, Snapchat is highlighting its creators with a new campaign: "Find Your Favorites on Snapchat." The campaign features Snap stars talking about their creative content and encourages users to discover fresh talent within the app.

Our Two Cents on Social Media Marketing 🧙♂️
Jump on trends early while they’re hot, but make sure they align with your brand’s tone and values. Forced memes can backfire.
Don’t just copy the trend, make it unique. Customize the meme or trend to highlight your brand’s personality or message in a creative way.
Not every trend works for every audience. Focus on memes and trends that resonate with your followers and feel relevant to their interests.
