Threads boasts tens of millions of daily users!
A weekly newsletter about all things social media by Nuelink
Welcome to Nuelink Chronicles, your weekly roundup of social media news! With the end of another busy week, we look back at the week to break down for you the biggest scoops so far.
Last week, the social media world was buzzing with the aftermath of Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter. Many far-right users previously banned from the platform found their way back, and moderation policies were removed. This prompted some users to seek alternatives, and they turned to Bluesky, hoping for a more inclusive platform.
However, their hopes were soon dashed when protests erupted on Bluesky. The platform faced a backlash when it was discovered that racial slurs were being used in usernames, including a user with an offensive handle. The community quickly realized that Bluesky's inability to block such names was at the heart of the problem, leading to uproar among users.
Instagram Threads also emerged as a new contender with a skyrocketing success story. Within days of its launch, the app amassed over 100 million users, already capturing a significant portion of Twitter's global active user base. Truth Social, Twitter's largest U.S. rival, paled in comparison with only one million weekly active users.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, reassured the public that Threads was still thriving with millions of daily users. He debunked reports of declining usage and emphasized the app's strong start, reaching an impressive 100 million users shortly after its launch. However, some analytics firms claimed that Threads' daily active users had decreased by half within a week.
But while Instagram Threads soared, Twitter faced financial challenges. Elon Musk's expectations of positive cashflow by June were not met, and Twitter's advertising revenue plummeted by nearly 50%, leaving its cashflow in negative territory. Twitter Spaces, despite its popularity, hasn't generated revenue and remains a costly endeavor.
Yet, Twitter still remains full steam ahead. The app made an important change to its direct message settings. Users now have a third option to receive messages only from those they follow and verified Twitter users. But this change raises concerns, especially on Elon Musk's Twitter, as it essentially allows anyone paying for Twitter Blue to message a user, potentially opening the door to spam and unwanted communication.
Interestingly, Instagram Threads, Twitter's rival, found itself facing similar rate limit issues due to spam attacks. Even as Threads achieved early success, it had to implement tighter restrictions to combat the spam onslaught.
Instagram, on the other hand, continued its competition with TikTok by introducing updates to its Reels templates. The new "Template Browser" allows users to explore and create engaging short-form videos effortlessly. You can browse through recommended and trending templates, as well as those you have saved, making the creative process even more seamless.
On the other side of the aisle, TikTok made a significant move in the music industry by launching its Elevate program. Aimed at identifying rising artists, Elevate seeks to support musicians in building long-lasting careers, moving beyond being one-hit wonders. The company signed a licensing deal with Warner Music Group, signaling its commitment to fostering musical talent.
Meanwhile, YouTube is experimenting with a new feature called "Stable volume." This setting aims to provide users with a more consistent audio experience by controlling video volume levels, creating a more enjoyable viewing experience.

The "I Don’t Like It" Trend: Lip sync to this sound while recording your video on something you strongly dislike. You can enhance the context by incorporating props, green-screened images, or selecting a specific setting, such as an office. Finally, add an overlay text onto the video to express your feelings of distaste. The funny videos always win this trend.
