TikTok will not be the same after this…
A weekly newsletter about all things social media by Nuelink
Welcome to another week in the dynamic world of social media. Join us as we navigate through the latest twists and turns in the social media landscape, offering you a glimpse into the past week.
As we covered last week, MrBeast, also known as Jimmy Donaldson, raked in an astounding $260k in ad revenue within a single week by resurfacing an old video on X. This financial windfall was made possible through X's Amplify video promotion program, initially limited to specific partner publishers. X acknowledges this success and plans to expand the program, although the entry requirements remain undisclosed, and earnings are expected to vary based on audience size.
Still in the video realm, TikTok, known for its full-screen vertical videos, appears to be shifting gears as some creators share screenshots indicating a preference for horizontally shot content. Videos meeting specified criteria will receive a boost in the app for 72 hours, providing a significant incentive for creators seeking increased exposure.
But not all is good news for TikTok this week. Universal Music Group announced the withdrawal of its music from the platform as of Feb. 1, following unsuccessful negotiations on usage rights. This decision may impact TikTok's music-driven content, given Universal's position as home to major artists like Taylor Swift, Adele, Drake, and Billie Eilish.
The social media landscape also sees Threads experiencing substantial growth, with downloads tripling month-over-month in December. Threads has secured a spot in the top 10 most downloaded apps on both the App Store and Google Play, outpacing its direct rival, X (formerly Twitter), which lags behind in downloads. Mark Zuckerberg, in turn, announced that Threads now boasts over 130 million monthly active users during the company's fourth-quarter earnings.
YouTube, on the other hand, introduces a new way to boost live-stream donations with Super Chat likes, allowing viewers to "like" a Super Chat within the stream. Super Chat, available in live-streams and Premieres, enables viewers to purchase animated Super Stickers, highlighted with distinct background colors.
But that is not all! YouTube has now reached 100 million paid users across YouTube Music and YouTube Premium, marking a growth from the 80 million paid users reported in November 2022. YouTube's significant contribution to Google's business is evident, generating $9.2 billion in Q4 2023, up from $8 billion in the same period the previous year.
This is where we leave now that you caught up to all social media news. Until next week, happy scrolling! 🚀
