YouTube vs. X, who pays creators better?
A weekly newsletter about all things social media by Nuelink
Welcome back to our weekly social media recap! In the latest move towards Elon Musk’s ambitious “everything app” vision, X Corp has secured money transmitter approval in Utah, marking the fifteenth U.S. state to grant the company this license. The approval aligns with X's plan to introduce peer-to-peer payments in the app, a move facilitated by the money transmitter license.
Speaking of X and payment, renowned YouTuber MrBeast, also known as Jimmy Donaldson, has tested X’s monetization capabilities by uploading one of his videos directly to the platform. This move follows a recent exchange between Donaldson and X owner Elon Musk, where the YouTuber expressed doubts about the profitability of X compared to YouTube. Despite these concerns, Musk seems to have persuaded MrBeast to give X a try by resharing one of his posted YouTube videos on X.
While we are on this topic, YouTube continues its battle against ad blockers by implementing measures to slow down load times for users employing these tools. This crackdown initiated last fall when YouTube warned users about ad blocker usage and presented options to either allow ads or subscribe to YouTube Premium.
On the other side of Silicon Valley, Meta is unveiling a suite of creator management tools within its Business Suite, providing agencies with enhanced ways to manage talent across Meta’s various apps. With the growing trend of creators seeking monetization opportunities, Meta's creator management tools offer agencies streamlined access to analytics, profile tools, and more, while still maintaining a clear separation between user profiles and business functions.
Instagram, on the other hand, is addressing concerns about teens' screen time by introducing nighttime nudges for teen accounts. These prompts will remind teens, who have spent more than 10 minutes on Instagram late at night, to consider logging off and getting some rest.
As for TikTok, the social media giant is experimenting with generative AI through a new "AI Song" option. Users are now prompted to utilize this feature, which can generate original music based on text prompts, adding another creative dimension to the platform's content creation capabilities.

Trends 📈
The “Come Here, Look at Me” Trend: Post a video to this sound and CapCut template, add a humorous text overlay that describes a scenario where someone might instruct you to stop or cut it out.
The “Receipts, Proof, Timeline, Screenshots” Trend: Use this audio with text overlay to provide receipts when you are questioned on your work or want to explain something that is seemingly obvious.
The “What I Suffer From” Trend: Use this sound to reveal what you suffer from. This is a fun way to describe one of your quirks, such as hitting people when they make you laugh.
The “Silent Review” Trend: Use your body language and gestures to silently review various products. This is a great way for businesses to showcase and recommend their products.
Memes 🤣
The “Confused Ryan Gosling” Meme: Ryan Gosling has been unabashedly displaying his comical facial expressions at recent awards shows. His latest subtly horrified reaction upon winning an award for the iconic tune "I'm Just Ken," has become the ideal meme material.
